Lusting Portland

The Portland Vase,

a cameo glass, AD 5-25, is an artistic vision of imagined times, long ago.

Its influence is obvious in Catherine, the Wedgewood art by John Flaxman,

again in Dancing Hours,

and in Flaxman's own version of the Portland Vase.

Stunning. The dining room mantle in our house has three blue and white panels. The carving isn't quite as fine as traditional Wedgewood, at least in my opinion. Of course everyone wants them to be the rreal thing! The mantle itself was carved on site in the late 1760's but family tradition says the panels came from England.

This is an awesome blog. Nice job.
